Caren Mercer Andreasen STREET PAINTING FESTIVAL Held in conjuction with the Great Prosser Balloon Rally and Harvest Festival, watch local and regional artists create works of art on the pavement in downtown Prosser. In two days, artists create masterpieces with chalk that you must see to believe. Although they use special pastels for their art, the result looks like a painting. Bring your lawn chair to sit and watch the artists while enjoying a variety of musical entertainment.
PURCHASE A “CHALK BLOCK” AND CREATE YOUR OWN MASTERPIECE Chalk blocks are available for five dollars at the event. Children & Adults welcome. Supplies are provided and a 2' x 2' chalk block is just $5.00.
In the 16th century, soldiers returning from war could not find jobs and many began to paint pictures of the Madonna on the streets, using colored chalk. They relied on donations from passersby. This ancient tradition revived in the 1980’s and arrived in the USA in 1987. Here is more information about street painting. The Prosser Arts and Culture Team sponsored the first Prosser street painting festival in 2000. It was the first event of its kind in Washington. It is getting bigger and better each year. We encourange you to attend this special event and to invite friends and family as well. COME PAINT THE TOWN! |
